For the last 25 years, the box office has been said to be ruled by the Three Khans of Bollywood. But two other dynamic stars (Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan) have also managed to consistently give commercial success to their producers during the same time period. Though Devgan is often referred as the expressionless performer, but over the years he has continuously proven everyone wrong. He has worked in all kinds of films and has got a great fan following who never tolerate his shitty movies.
Comparatively one can easily say that neither of SRK’s movies in the last 10 years have been a flop and several of Devgan’s movies have seen those flop tags, but his great performances have never gone unnoticed. Here is a list of some of his finest movies. Zakhm (1998) Ajay has been in the industry since 1991 and it took him 7 years to give the performance of his life. There is nothing wrong with ‘Zakhm’. It got Nargis Dutt Award for national integration and Ajay got national award for his acting. Bhatt wrote an unforgettable story and two of its songs are still popular. The story is about a muslim woman who marries a hindu man but disguises herself as hindu in front of her sons.
When she gets burned during riots, her elder son (Ajay) makes sure that she gets the proper burial. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam(1999) This one is mostly remembered for Salman-Aishwarya Jodi but it has got a stupendous performance from Ajay. Its plot has been adopted from a Bengali novel ‘Na Hanyate’ written by Maitreyi Devi. The film is divided into totally two different parts. The first half has got great comic timings and the second half is damn too serious. The story is about how a husband makes sure that his wife meets her true love. The Legend of Bhagat Singh(2002) Apart from being a biopic on the patriot’s life, the movie was in news due to its coinciding release with ‘23rd March 1931: Shaheed’ which was also based on Bhagat Singh’s life. This mess up came due to a feud between Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol over the issue of lead actor.
Both of them were commercial disasters. Anyways Ajay played this role flawlessly and won a national award for his acting. It is said that Ajay didn’t act but he lived this role. Deewangee(2002) ‘Surprise of the year’ can be the right set of words to define it. Until then his image was of always playing the protagonist, but this one movie changed everything and it left everyone awestruck. Ajay showcased why his acting skills can never be defined within any boundary. Well supported by the skills of Akshaye Khanna, it is one hell of a watch.
The story is about a psycho lover who wants to get back her childhood love. Omkara(2006) Based on Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’, it was a continuation of Vishal Bharadwaj’s love for Shakespearean literature after Maqbool. When Vishal Bharadwaj directs a movie, even average actors look too good. So what can you expect from such an ensemble cast? Ajay did justice to the titular character but it was Saif Ali Khan who stole the show. It is considered as one of the finest movies of the 2000’s.
