Gambar Perpustakaan Kartun
Seumur hidup aku tak pernah masuk perpustakaan awam kat Johor ni selain yg dekat Pasir Gudang. Bukannya ape, perpustakaan awam tak banyak dan jauh dari rumah. Paling dekat dgn umah aku Perpustakan Awam Pasir Gudang yg sungguh kesian aku tgk keadaannya.
Dah la kecik, buku2 pulak sungguh ketinggalan zaman. Banyak buku yg hampir seusia perpustakaan tu sendiri. Ni based on ape aku observed beberapa tahun dulu la, sekarang tak tau pulak camne.

Dan lagi satu aku ingat, kat perpustakaan tu dulu masa zaman aku sekolah ada sorg staf akak yg garang sangat. Muka masam memanjang, kawan aku pernah kene halau sbb bising. Perpustakaan yg dekat Larkin tu pulak aku tak pernah masuk, so no comment la.
Beberapa minggu lepas aku baca surat khabar ada satu lagi perpustakaan awam bukak kat Jalan Yahya Awal. Siape pernah pegi perpustakaan ni? Macam mana dgn buku2 yg ade kat situ? Environment pulak? Boleh pinjam berapa byk buat buku? Johor Bahru Public Library On Saturday (6th Sept), I went out to send Marsya to school - a replacement for Hari Raya holiday extension.
We arrived 45 minutes early, so I made a detour to the new JB public library in Jalan Yahya Awal, a stone's throw from her school. Opened nearly a month ago (despite delays), I still haven't been there. A good time to check out what RM5.7mil library can offer. First impression being important, they got it right. It's a nice place, and looks organised.
Well, it doesn't look like a library, but much more like a bookstore in a shopping mall. The atmosphere is like being in a bookstore - but much better. It has an open cafeteria right behind the service counter, and you can borrow books (and other media) for free, up to 14 days. It is a modern library, very much different with the one I went frequently during my younger years.
There are many different section for visitors to enjoy different medium that knowledge can be enjoyed. Ground Floor: Magazine Rack - like the ones in Borders in Times Square, but with much lesser spread of titles Audio and Video (DVD/VCD) shelves - can be viewed upstairs in tv room. Cafe Aras - for refreshments Children's Corner - much like a kindergarten setting with cool Ikea stuff (no kidding!) and lots of books Petronas Street Smart - now until 22nd Sept First Floor: Adult Sections - divided into two - Fiction (on the left) and Non-Fiction (on the right) Games Room - I saw children playing congkak in there Teenager Section - with lots of interesting titles Reference Section - didn't get in there, yet Discussion Rooms - a few enclosed rooms with glasswall for discussion. Media Room - for viewing video Islamic Media Room - for viewing digital Quran Second Floor: closed (for now) Note: the room names above is only my designation, not the official name given by the library authority.
Here's a few things I have to say about the library: Af first I wonder why there were discussion rooms provided. After sitting down with a book for a while, then it finally occured to me.
The library is not as quiet as it is supposed to be (or used to be?). With the Petronas Street Smart in town, children playing with it can be heard on the first floor. Discussion rooms were full, and teenagers doing their discussion out in the reading area. I really couldn't believe that I was sitting with a book in a library, with all these noise. I wonder if this is the concept of a library these days. I looked around, there were no 'please be silent' reminders posted. The collection of books is impressive.
It's close to browsing the bookshelves in a bookstore. Most of the materials are new, modern titles. You don't feel like you're transported to 10 or 20 years back in time when browsing through the book titles. For non-fiction works, titles are abound in many different subjects - religion, management, self-improvement, hobbies and craft, etc. There's also Chinese and Tamil collection, albeit very limited.

And yes, they do have Michael Crichton's in Fiction section (recent titles only). Kudos to the management. The desks and chairs are nice - they're teak. However, comfort is compromised while giving way for appearance.
I strongly feel that they could spend on quality plastic/steel chairs with cushion for better comfort. Everywhere in the building you could see people deeply sunk in their laptops. That's because it is equipped with wifi connection. For mobility in the building, there are hits and misses. There are ramps and an elevator for the disabled. If you choose to use the stairs (most would do), please be extra careful. Due to the design, the steps are varied in width along a single step.
If left side is narrow, the right side is wider (and vice-versa). The center has constant width, but you have to forgo the handrail.
Amenities are quite good. There are toilets and surau provided (at the time of writing, I haven't checked them out yet). If you fancy a drink and light snack, there's a cafe on the ground floor.
In the children section, there's a baby cot provided. I'm not sure whether there's a feeding area, though. I like the fact that the library is not just a depository of books.
Here, multimedia learning takes on its true meaning - and they are accessible to everyone. Opening hours are from 9am to 5.30pm (until 5pm during Ramadhan). I think it would be superb if it is open till late - say, 9pm. Closed on Mondays, and, it will be closed during 1st and 3rd Saturdays soon. Not really convenient, eh?
After that short while in the library, Marsya and I went off to her school. It turned out that actually classes for evening session were cancelled (or postponed?) without official letter from the school. Anyway, this was informed by one of the teachers, so it's okay. That means another round in the library, then. We went back the following day, too. This time with the whole family.
We registered with the library and got our library card each - and went back home with at least a book. Oh, and please be reminded that there's an annual registration fee. Nuff said, I suggest you go experience the library yourself. New library for the city By Chuah Bee Kim NOW you can hang out all you want at the new RM5.7 million public library at Jalan Yahya Awal in Johor Baru.
The library finally opened its doors after a two-year delay due to glitches in the setting up of the information and communication technology (ICT) solutions. The three-storey building, furnished with teak wood furniture, provides a cosy ambience and a conducive environment for reading and learning. Johor Public Corporation Library director Ungku Hajah Noorakmal Ungku Sulaiman did not dwell on the delay issues but instead said that the important thing was the much-awaited facility, housing more than 100,000 books and magazine titles, was now ready. Of the number, 40 per cent are made up of children's books. Plans to have audio books for the vision-impaired are also in the pipeline. For senior citizens with vision problems, the library has low-vision equipment from the United States to aid them.
The Internet can also be accessed via WiFi, making it convenient for those who wish to bring their laptops. Noorakmal said the library, with a seating capacity of 450, also has a cafeteria and a room furnished with baby cots for mothers with young children. 'In Europe, it is common to see baby cots in libraries for mothers who want to take time out and read. We want to promote such culture here.' Noorakmal also said there were no strict rules on dress code as long as visitors came properly attired. 'There are places which prohibit the wearing of slippers, but I tell my staff that as long as the visitors conduct themselves well, they should not be chased away simply because of that.' Besides books, there are also Hollywood, Korean and Hindi movies made available on DVD and VCD, which visitors can select and watch on the spot.
'As we have a limited collection now, we do not allow the DVDs and VCDs to be taken out of the library.' Visitors can also find some of the latest book titles. 'Normally, it takes about eight months before the latest titles are found in a public library. We are working with leading book retailers where they send a few of their latest titles over.' As for the bad habit of some who do not return borrowed books to the library, Noorakmal said this was common in Johor where many of its residents are not from the state.
' We have a service where members can drop off the books at any Pos Malaysia outlet and pay a flat rate of RM2.50 to ensure they are returned to us safely.' The library is open daily from 9am to 5.30pm except on Mondays. Baguslah ade wifi dan yg lagi menarik etika pemakaian tak strict sangat. Boleh pakai selipar lagi. I was so excited when I learnt from a friend (thanks, Mim:)) that there's a new state-of-the-art public library in the city of Shah Alam. You must be wondering why someone would get so worked up over a library. Well folks, there are 2 main reasons. Firstly, I've always been a 'Minah Library'. During my secondary school years, I spent most of my time at the library as I was a pengawas perpustakaan.
Likewise, during my undergraduate years, I also spent most of my time at the library; not because I wanted a quiet place to study, but more to get away from my inviting bed! My postgrad years in UM saw me going to the library almost everyday, heeding the advice of a professor to treat study leave as work. Now in Bristol, the library is still my favourite place compared to the study room because it is not too quiet. Yeah, you heard me right. Students whispering, the printer whirring, the automatic door opening and closing, etc - are not distractions at all.
They helped my mind stay focus rather than wander away. Yeah, apart from shopping complexes, the place that I frequented the most is probably the library:).
Secondly, I was looking for a place to 'chill out' from the hot Malaysian weather. There was the option of doing so in my institution's library, but somehow I didn't feel like it. Then, I learnt about this new library on Facebook, and within minutes I was on my way to check out the place. The huge library complex. The flagship of, the library nestled amongst the greens of the, in Section 13, Shah Alam. The library complex itself was humongous and had a splendid view:). Aka The Blue Mosque as seen from the library complex The library had only been opened for about 2 weeks (22 July 2011) and judging from the few visitors that day, I presumed that not many locals were aware of its existence.
Then again, most people were probably working.:P The frontliners were friendly. As the the staff have yet to come-up with the library brochure, they asked me to take my time to explore the place. I was given a small uncang (drawstring bag) to put in my shoes as the library zones were fully-carpeted. Then, off I went doing what I do best - exploring every nook and corner a la reporter Majalah 3. There were 6 levels altogether. Each level was designated for a particular age-group or function. View of the levels from the ground floor View of the levels from the 4th floor.
The ground floor's main attractions were the Mini 3D and 6D Theaters. I was told by the staff that they were having a 6D simulation at around 2.00 - 2.30 pm, the day I was there. However, I missed it. I will definitely not miss it the next time I come:).
Never experienced 6D in my life! Can't imagine being in a theatre that stimulates all your 6 senses! Must be loads of fun!
Even the 4D shows that I paid to see in Madame Tussaud and the London Eye Theatre were pretty unforgetable. And PPAS is having a 6D one!
How awesome is that??:) Another attraction was the reading garden. a sure hit for kids and adults alike. Look at the pictures below and you'll know why.:) Fancy reading a book under a tree?? Just like what you use to do in your kampung. Pix credit: Mimma Sayuti Kids nowadays are so lucky!:) Pix credit: Mimma Sayuti What you can find on the 1st Floor:).
All the levels have some standard features such as TV lounge, IT station, book collection, reading / working area, sitting area, discussion rooms and service counter. TV lounge Reading / working area next to the discussion rooms The main reading / working area with sofas for visitors to unwind.
There were 2 mini gyms in the library. The women's gym was on the third floor while the men's, on the fourth. My kind of place:).
Only 3 exercise machines, you say? That cross-trainer is good enough for me, and hubs would be happy to jump on that treadmill anytime:D. Not so sure whether you have to pay to use this facility. But even if you have to, I bet it won't be as expensive as those commercial gyms in Subang Jaya. In case you were wondering whether you can buy some snacks here, the cafe will probably be opened after Ramadhan.

Looking forward for the other facilities to start operating as well, in a few months time!:D. Plus points aside, I feel that the library needs to stock-up on books. The existing collection is quite limited but hey, there's always room for improvement:) Well Shah Alam city dwellers, go check this cool place. The library is open from 9.30 a.m.
To 5.00 p.m., daily this Ramadhan. It is closed on public holidays. If you ask me, not your typical, boring library:).
